Transportation Officer

About the role

The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) seeks a dedicated Transportation Officer to provide safe, secure transport for youth under its care. This position supports the agency’s mission to transform young lives, strengthen families, and promote safer communities by ensuring reliable movement to medical, dental, court, and other authorized appointments.

Key responsibilities

• Provide secure transportation of youth between facilities, courts, medical appointments, and other authorized locations while maintaining safety and supervision.
• Follow DJJ policies on youth supervision, security protocols, documentation, use of restraints, and incident reporting.
• Complete accurate, timely documentation for transports, incidents, vehicle use, and youth transfers.
• Respond to operational needs across the state, including on‑call periods, after‑hours, and emergency situations.
• Inspect, maintain, and properly use transport vehicles and security equipment.
• Assist with school security duties and report unusual activities as required.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of South Carolina state laws, child‑abuse statutes, and regulations governing custody, control, and supervision of youth.
• Ability to pass DJJ competency examinations and maintain certification under the SC Law Enforcement Training Act.
• Physical ability to perform restraints, lift 50+ lb, bend, and work in locked quarters without restrictions.
• Willingness to work on‑call and respond to urgent transport needs.
