Transportation Maintenance Technician I/II

About the role

The Transportation Maintenance Technician provides essential roadway maintenance, equipment operation, and traffic control services for Freestone County. The role supports public safety during emergencies and assists law enforcement at accident scenes.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine roadway repairs, guard‑rail erection, sign and delineator installation, and landscape maintenance.
• Operate light and heavy equipment such as front‑end loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms and mowers.
• Conduct basic welding tasks as needed for sign and structure repairs.
• Provide traffic control, including placement and removal of cones, barricades, and warning signs, and flag traffic at construction or incident sites.
• Assist stranded motorists and support local law‑enforcement officials during accidents and emergencies.
• Carry out preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment.
• Inspect maintenance contracts, construction methods, and bridge work for compliance with specifications and standards.
• Complete required reports, timekeeping, inventory, accident forms and PMI documentation.

Required profile

• Works independently following standard practices without frequent supervision.
• Comfortable interacting with private entities and the public during emergency situations.
• Able to assist law‑enforcement officials and respond to traffic incidents.

Required skills

• Operation of light and heavy equipment (front‑end loader, backhoe, street sweeper, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, mower).
• Basic welding proficiency.
• Traffic control device placement and management.
• Preventive maintenance inspections and minor equipment repairs.
• Roadway repair techniques and guard‑rail installation.
