Transportation Maintenance Technician I

About the role

The Transportation Maintenance Technician I provides routine transportation operations and maintenance support for roadways, equipment and public safety in the Laredo area. This entry‑level position works under standard procedures with minimal supervision, assisting law‑enforcement officials and the public during emergencies.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in installing, repairing and maintaining signs, delineators, mailbox supports and traffic control devices.
• Perform basic welding tasks as required.
• Operate light equipment such as front‑end loaders, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers and mowers.
• Maintain highways, rights‑of‑way, guard rails, highway markers and picnic/rest areas; perform roadway repairs and debris removal.
• Provide support to law‑enforcement at accident sites and assist stranded motorists.
• Conduct preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment.
• Complete required reports, including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory and accident documentation.

Required profile

• No formal education required; no prior experience needed for the TMT I level.
• Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
• Commercial Class A driver’s license with an “N” endorsement required from the date of employment.
• Ability to obtain a Texas Class A CDL if not already held.

Required skills

• Operation of front‑end loader, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
• Basic welding proficiency.
• Installation and placement of traffic control devices and signage.
• Preventive maintenance inspection and minor equipment repair.
• Knowledge of highway/bridge construction materials and basic mathematical fundamentals.
