Traffic Operations Engineer Supervisor

About the role

The Traffic Operations Engineer Supervisor leads a team of transportation engineers across planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance functions. This position ensures compliance with federal and state regulations while addressing traffic safety and efficiency challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate with district design on schematics and assist with capacity and level‑of‑service studies.
• Review and modify traffic control, traffic management, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) plans.
• Investigate public complaints on signals, signs, railroad crossings, and pavement markings; develop incident‑management strategies.
• Meet with department supervisors, law‑enforcement agencies, and city officials to discuss traffic problems and solutions.
• Negotiate fees, budgets, scopes of work, and contract schedules.
• Conduct traffic engineering studies to recommend solutions for high‑accident locations, warrant signals, set speed zones, and determine highway capacity and channelization.
• Prepare and submit Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (P.S.&E.) for traffic projects.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS.
• At least 4 years of transportation engineering experience (full‑time or prorated).
• One year of supervisory or managerial experience.
• Valid driver’s license; ability to operate a state vehicle.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license – must obtain Texas PE license within six months of hire if licensed elsewhere.
