Tool Designer

About the role

Moog is seeking a Tool Designer to join its performance‑driven team in Blacksburg, VA. You will create and refine tooling solutions that support the company’s manufacturing operations, working closely with engineers and production staff.

Key responsibilities

• Develop 3D models and 2D drawings for custom molds, fixtures, and tools using CAD software.
• Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers to design, implement, and continuously improve tooling.
• Select appropriate materials based on durability, heat resistance, machinability, and cost considerations.
• Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and maintain accurate engineering documentation.
• Analyze tooling and production issues, propose corrective actions, and drive efficiency gains.
• Provide training and cross‑training to colleagues as needed.
• Perform additional duties assigned by management.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED (required).
• Minimum 3 years of machine‑shop experience or 2 years as a Tool Designer, or equivalent technical education and experience.
• Quality‑focused with strong mechanical aptitude and dexterity.
• Self‑starter capable of working independently and taking initiative.
• Team‑oriented with the ability to collaborate across functions.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Willingness to travel internationally once per year.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD software for 3D modeling and 2D drafting.
• Experience with 3D printing technologies.
• Tool design and material selection expertise.
