About the role

The Board of Education Department of Human Resources is seeking a qualified Temporary Guidance Counselor to support students in Buffalo, NY. This short‑term position focuses on academic planning, college readiness, and personal development for high school learners.

Key responsibilities

• Assist students in creating academic programs aligned with their interests and abilities, emphasizing high‑school selection and post‑secondary pathways.
• Guide students and parents in interpreting standardized test results and provide information on required assessments.
• Collaborate with teachers to deliver guidance lessons and related information.
• Develop individualized post‑secondary planning timelines and monitor academic and behavioral progress.
• Increase student awareness of career and educational planning, including job readiness resources.
• Provide counseling on attendance, tardiness, self‑esteem, communication, decision‑making, and relationship skills.
• Offer crisis intervention services and support students with personal or social issues that impede learning.
• Perform other duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.

Required profile

• Master’s Degree in Counseling Education.
• Valid NYS Certificate in Counseling Education (attach PDF or screenshot).
• Strong knowledge of comprehensive school counseling philosophies and evidence‑based methodologies.
• Understanding of college admissions processes, data analysis, and scholarship research.
• Preference given to candidates residing in the City of Buffalo.
