Tax Examiner I – Distribution Accounting

About the role

The Colorado Department of Revenue is seeking a Tax Examiner I to join its Distribution Accounting Unit. In this position you will review tax returns, payments, and account activity to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with state tax laws.

Key responsibilities

• Examine tax returns, payments and account records for errors, discrepancies and outstanding balances.
• Research and resolve account issues by analyzing financial records, tax forms and supporting documentation.
• Determine and process corrective actions, including account adjustments.
• Provide guidance to taxpayers on filing requirements and explain tax laws and processes.
• Support voluntary compliance through accurate distribution of tax revenues to state and local jurisdictions.

Required profile

• Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking.
• Ability to interpret and apply tax laws, policies and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Customer‑service orientation to assist taxpayers and resolve inquiries.

Required skills

• Proficiency in reviewing financial and tax documentation.
• Basic knowledge of state tax regulations (sales, use, lodging, wage withholding, etc.).
