Tax Examiner – Hybrid In‑Office Role

About the role

The Utah State Tax Commission is hiring two Tax Examiners to perform complex audits of state tax returns and ensure compliance with Utah tax laws. This full‑time, hybrid position combines in‑office work with remote days.

Key responsibilities

• Interpret and apply Utah tax laws, rules, and policies.
• Conduct audits of miscellaneous tax returns to verify compliance.
• Review business reports, tax files, and prior audit documentation.
• Schedule and perform on‑site and remote audits with taxpayers.
• Interview taxpayers and examine their records.
• Prepare detailed audit reports.
• Provide training and answer tax‑professional inquiries through a contact center.
• Participate in outreach and education initiatives for tax professionals and the public.

Required profile

• At least two years of experience reviewing miscellaneous taxes.
• Four or more years of auditing experience or a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
• Current personal tax filings and vehicle registrations.
• Ability to pass a criminal background check.
