Systems Specialist II - CryoEM/CryoET

About the role

The Department of Structural Biology at Genentech is looking for a cryoEM/cryoET expert to join its cryogenic electron microscopy team as a Systems Specialist II. The department integrates macromolecular crystallography, cryoEM, cryoET and NMR spectroscopy to support structure-based drug discovery and fundamental research, working with scientists across Roche and Genentech.

Key responsibilities

• Process data to deliver high-resolution cryoEM maps for collaborative research teams.
• Work with interdisciplinary project teams to solve complex protein target structures and annotate and analyze in situ tomograms.
• Train and empower facility users across all workflow stages, from sample preparation to data processing.
• Operate and maintain instruments such as Titan Krios and Glacios microscopes with SelectrisX Falcon4i detectors.
• Test, adapt and adopt emerging protocols, software tools and technologies for cryoEM/cryoET.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree with 5+ years, Master's degree with 3+ years, or PhD with 0-2 years of relevant experience in biochemistry, biophysics or structural biology.
• Hands-on experience with on-grid cell culture, FIB milling, tilt series data collection and related cryoET workflows.
• Track record of obtaining high-resolution 3D maps and/or tomograms from cryoEM single-particle and/or tilt series data.
• Enthusiasm for growing skills in grid preparation, automated data collection and facility operations.
• Team player with strong communication skills and attention to detail.

What we offer

• Salary range of $91,900 - $170,700 for California, depending on experience, qualifications and location; a discretionary annual bonus may be available.
