Systems Engineer

About the role

Smithville Communications, Indiana’s trusted provider of Internet, Voice, Security, and Enterprise data services, is looking for a detail‑oriented Systems Engineer. You will ensure the reliability, performance, and security of our server environments while supporting strategic projects that drive innovation.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement disaster‑recovery solutions for the provider‑side server network.
• Perform server and software upgrades to maintain security and performance standards.
• Continuously monitor system health, performance, and security across all server environments.
• Conduct operational reviews, troubleshoot issues, and ensure high uptime.
• Process service orders and support operational requests.
• Research system and software requirements, conduct lab testing, and evaluate new technologies.
• Design, build, and implement infrastructure improvements and new capabilities.
• Commission and deploy virtual and physical servers.
• Perform hardware repairs, upgrades, and installations.

Required profile

• Technical degree or equivalent experience with server hardware, virtualization, and hosted environments.
• Strong understanding of Microsoft Windows Server and Linux environments.
• Knowledge of networking fundamentals such as DHCP, DNS, firewalls, email/web hosting, network security, and database configuration/management.
• Familiarity with system‑monitoring tools (Elastic Stack, Grafana, SolarWinds, SNMP).
• Experience with backup solutions (e.g., Rubrik).
• Knowledge of Debian‑ and RedHat‑based systems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• High attention to detail and methodical problem‑solving.
• Effective project‑ and time‑management abilities.
