Surgical Assistant (Level 2) – Full‑Time

About the role

The Surgical Assistant 2 provides direct intra‑operative support to the primary surgeon, ensuring optimal exposure, hemostasis, and closure during procedures. Working under the surgeon’s supervision, the assistant also contributes to pre‑ and post‑operative patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Position patients safely according to surgeon instructions, padding pressure points and monitoring circulation.
• Set up and operate surgical positioning equipment such as fracture tables, head and body stabilizers, and C‑arm extensions.
• Place and secure retractors, manage sponges, suction, irrigation, and assist with tissue manipulation.
• Perform hemostasis techniques including clamping, cauterizing, ligating, applying clips, and local hemostatic agents.
• Apply and monitor tourniquets when indicated, and assess patient for positioning‑related injuries after surgery.

Required profile

• Current staff, faculty, or temporary employee of the University of Miami (internal applicants).
• Ability to follow detailed surgical protocols and maintain a sterile environment.
• Strong understanding of patient safety, positioning, and intra‑operative workflow.

Required skills

• Proficiency with fracture tables, head stabilizers, body stabilizers, and C‑arm extensions.
• Experience in retractors placement, suctioning, irrigation, and sponge management.
• Competence in tourniquet application and hemostasis techniques (clamping, cauterizing, ligating, clips, hemostatic agents).
