Structural Engineering Summer Intern

About the role

Amentum, a global engineering services company, offers a Civil/Structural Engineering summer internship starting in the summer of 2027. The selected student, called the Amentum Scholar, works at the Tullahoma, Tennessee office under the supervision of a technical manager and mentor in the Structural Design group, which designs complex testing equipment and facilities for the automotive and aerospace industries. Interns work 40-hour weeks for about 10 weeks in June, July and August, with housing not provided.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine engineering tasks and limited parts of complex ones under the direction of experienced engineers
• Prepare computations, specifications and reports of limited scope
• Apply design loading to structures using applicable building and design codes
• Design and analyze structures to meet project and code requirements
• Coordinate drafters on 3D models and 2D drawing packages
• Review subcontractor submittals and shop drawings and support construction at project sites
• Interface with clients and other disciplines, including design reviews and presentations
• Assist with project planning, budgeting and cost estimating

Required profile

• BSCE or MSCE degree, rising junior or above, with at least 2 years in an accredited civil engineering program
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; 3.5 or higher desired
• Coursework in statics and strength of materials; steel and concrete design desired
• Rising junior or above, with at least one extra-curricular activity
• Right to work permanently in the United States

Required skills

• Basic understanding of structural analysis and design, steel and concrete design, statics and strength of materials
• Desired: 3D CAD, finite element analysis, ANSYS, STAAD, RISA-3D
• Desired: past internship experience
