Steamfitter - Menard Correctional Center

About the role

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a Steamfitter for the Menard Correctional Center. The position installs, repairs and maintains air handling equipment and condensing units, cleans and replaces defective pipes and fittings, and keeps records of materials used. It is a full-time, hourly union position with a schedule of 7:30 am to 3:30 pm Monday to Friday, with Saturday and Sunday off.

Key responsibilities

• Install, repair and maintain air handling equipment and condensing units
• Clean and replace defective pipes and fittings
• Maintain records of materials and supplies used
• Prepare records and reports on rule infractions by individuals in custody and employees
• Perform other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the above duties

Required profile

• No formal education required
• Ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check and a drug screen
• Active Universal Refrigeration Certification (EPA 608 Universal); must stay active while employed
• Ability to work at heights on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts or elevated platforms with proper fall protection
• Compliance with employer vaccine and medical standards

Preferred qualifications

• Experience as a journeyman steamfitter
• At least five years of experience installing, repairing and maintaining air handling, refrigeration and laundry equipment
• Welding experience for fabrication and repair work
• Experience maintaining records and inventory of materials, and tool counts and reports
• Current OSHA 10 training or higher
