Staff Software Engineer

About the role

Commerce, the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics and Makeswift, is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, a senior technical leader in its Engineering organization. The role influences architectural direction across multiple domains and ensures the platform scales efficiently and securely for over 60,000 merchants worldwide. It leads the design, development and evolution of large-scale distributed systems and helps integrate AI technologies, including machine learning models and GenAI solutions, into current and future products. The position is remote-first.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design, development and evolution of scalable, reliable, high-performance distributed systems and drive cross-domain architectural discussions
• Help define and execute the long-term technical roadmap, keeping decisions aligned with performance, scalability, reliability, security and maintainability
• Integrate AI technologies and evaluate emerging AI infrastructure and development practices
• Write testable, maintainable code, lead in-depth code reviews and build tools and frameworks that speed up delivery for other engineers
• Mentor engineers at all levels and collaborate with product managers, designers and engineering leaders across global teams

Required profile

• Minimum of 10 years of professional software engineering experience delivering production systems
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
• Proven experience architecting, building and maintaining large-scale distributed systems
• Proven track record of technical leadership and mentorship

Required skills

• Back-end development with two or more server-side languages (e.g. PHP, Go, Scala, Java, Python, Ruby)
• Distributed systems concepts such as consensus, consistency and fault tolerance
• Cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or similar) and microservices architecture
• SQL, in-memory storage and observability tooling (e.g. Sentry, Kibana, Datatog)
• Preferred: experience with LLMs and GenAI, vector databases, model orchestration tools and SaaS or multi-tenant platforms at scale

The national base salary range is $186,000 - $280,000, depending on experience, skills, qualifications and location. Variable compensation, equity and benefits may also apply.
