Staff+ Software Engineer, Financial Fraud

About the role

Anthropic’s Fraud Prevention team safeguards the company’s payment and monetisation platforms from financial abuse. As a Staff+ Software Engineer you will design and operate real‑time risk decision systems, manage the dispute and chargeback lifecycle, and build large‑scale fraud signals to protect subscriptions, in‑app purchases and promotions.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement real‑time risk decisioning that scores transactions at authorization time while balancing fraud loss, approval rates and latency.
• Develop tooling and automation for the dispute and chargeback lifecycle, including review queues, evidence collection and loss reporting.
• Engineer scalable fraud signals such as device fingerprinting, BIN/issuer data, velocity features and cross‑account linkage.
• Own a portfolio of metrics (loss rate, dispute rate, approval impact, false‑positive rate) and optimise them holistically.
• Lead investigations of emerging fraud patterns and build multi‑layered, adaptive defenses.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally with finance, support, legal, data science and external payment processors.

Required profile

• Proficiency in Python, SQL and data analysis tools.
• Experience building or operating fraud, risk or abuse detection systems in production.
• Strong communication skills to explain technical trade‑offs to non‑technical stakeholders.
