Staff Software Engineer, Compute Platform

About the role

Fastly's Compute team builds the platform for its Compute serverless service, which runs on a global edge network and lets customers run code in a highly secure environment with microsecond cold starts. The role is a Staff Software Engineer position focused on scaling the hosting infrastructure, combining networking and systems-level work with cross-team collaboration and designing high-quality APIs for customer-facing services. The team also contributes to open source projects such as Wasmtime.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and communicate with team members and other technical and product teams.
• Take part in code reviews and improve the codebase and team processes.
• Drive projects from a technical lead role, managing progress and sharing status with stakeholders.
• Write platform-level code in Rust handling back pressure, resource limits and interactions with other services.
• Analyze and fix performance and stability issues to meet high-scale requirements.
• Own a large-scale production system with very high performance and availability requirements.

Required profile

• At least 7 years of software development experience, with at least 3 in high-reliability systems programming, ideally in Rust.
• Comfortable writing asynchronous, concurrent code.
• Willingness to learn bleeding-edge technologies.
• Availability during core business hours, with a strong preference for Western and Mountain time zones, and participation in the team's on-call rotation.

What we offer

• Estimated salary range of $211,370-$253,644, with starting pay depending on experience, skills and location.
• Eligibility for equity and discretionary bonus programs.
