Staff Physician – Occupational Health Services

About the role

The MTA New York City Transit Occupational Health Services unit is seeking a Staff Physician to provide occupational medical evaluations for employees and pre‑employment candidates. Working across various OHS medical facilities, you will ensure compliance with federal, state and city safety regulations, supporting the safe operation of the city’s transit system.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct medical histories and physical examinations for pre‑employment fitness assessments.
• Review fitness‑for‑duty cases against NYC Transit Medical Standards, FTA, OSHA, and NYS DMV Article 19‑A regulations.
• Arrange follow‑up evaluations and determine appropriate medical dispositions.
• Participate in health screening programs such as sleep apnea and asbestos exposure.
• Document all evaluations in the central electronic medical application.
• Work at multiple OHS facilities based on daily operational needs.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MD or DO) with board certification in Occupational Medicine or related field.
• Eligibility to obtain US DOT CDL‑certified medical examiner status within one year if not already certified.
• Experience conducting occupational health examinations and interpreting fitness‑for‑duty decisions.
• Ability to work flexible hours (8½ hours between 8 am‑5:30 pm) and adapt to varied work locations.

Required skills

• Proficiency with electronic medical record systems.
• Knowledge of OSHA, FTA, and NYS DMV medical regulations.
• US DOT CDL Medical Examiner certification (or willingness to obtain within one year).
