About the role
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Staff Electrical Engineer to lead the electrical hardware development of next‑generation research and processing equipment. The role is based in Milpitas, CA and focuses on high‑power distribution, safety, sensor integration and control panel architecture for cutting‑edge fusion R&D tools.
Key responsibilities
- Architect complete power and low‑voltage electrical platforms, including distribution, cable harnesses and power conditioning.
- Create and approve detailed schematic packages (one‑line, multi‑line, I/O diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules) using AutoCAD Electrical and adhering to NFPA 79, NEC and UL 508A.
- Specify and integrate power supplies, circuit protection, VFDs, servo drives, safety relays and precision sensors such as thermocouples, pressure transducers, vacuum gauges and flow meters.
- Design grounding, shielding and isolation schemes to ensure signal integrity and mitigate EMI/EMC in high‑magnetic‑field environments.
- Implement ANSI/RIA 15.06 and OSHA‑compliant safety circuits, interlocks, light curtains and emergency‑stop systems.
- Lead hands‑on commissioning, power‑up, I/O checkout and troubleshooting of electrical hardware.
- Collaborate with software, mechanical and automation teams to translate high‑power infrastructure into reliable machine‑level controls.
Required profile
- Proven experience designing complex electrical hardware for industrial or research equipment.
- Deep knowledge of power distribution, safety standards and signal‑integrity techniques.
- Ability to lead cross‑functional teams and manage end‑to‑end electrical development.
- Strong communication skills to document designs and coordinate with mechanical and software engineers.
