Sr. Scientist – Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Proteomics

About the role

Amgen is seeking a hands-on bioinformatician to develop computational tools and data infrastructure for its Discovery Proteomics Group at the South San Francisco campus. The role combines scientific expertise in proteomics, bioinformatics and drug discovery with software engineering skills to turn experimental and discovery needs into fit-for-purpose computational solutions. It supports biomarker discovery, target evaluation, experimental design and mechanism-of-action studies.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement data analysis, management and visualization strategies for complex datasets from mass spectrometry and other technologies
• Conduct statistical analysis, data ingestion, database and tool development, and computational pipeline implementation for proteomics data
• Work closely with scientists from different functions and therapeutic areas, and deliver and present analysis results to key stakeholders
• Collaborate across genomic and proteomic platforms for data integration and mining, using external resources where appropriate

Required profile

• Basic qualification: doctorate; or master's degree with 3 years of scientific experience; or bachelor's degree with 5 years of scientific experience
• Preferred: PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Proteomics or Biology
• Strong background in biology or chemistry related to human diseases in immunology, oncology, inflammation and cardiometabolic disease
• Proven track record of independent critical thinking and scientific achievement
• Strong verbal and written skills, able to work independently and in small teams, and willing to collaborate across disciplines

Required skills

• Preferred: fluency in Python, R and SQL, and familiarity with statistical analysis, data processing, data ingestion, visualization and basic machine learning; deep learning packages a plus
• Preferred: working knowledge of Unix/Linux and cloud computing (AWS)
• Preferred: version control, Docker containers and reproducible data analysis practices
• Preferred: meta-analysis of large public proteomics studies (e.g. GTEx, CPTAC)
