Spring Legal Student Internship – Low Income Taxpayer Clinic

About the role

The Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) at Colorado Legal Services provides representation in tax controversies and education about taxpayer rights. This spring internship supports the clinic’s administrative tax practice through case‑related tasks.

Key responsibilities

• File received mail and client documents in electronic folders.
• Draft client letters and IRS forms.
• Schedule meetings with clients as needed.
• Attend outreach activities and possibly draft public‑facing education materials.
• Communicate with clients and partners using plain, trauma‑informed language.
• Maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to improve referrals.
• Comply with grant requirements and CLS policies.
• Opportunity to attend Tax Court on February 8th if schedule permits.

Required profile

• Demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to serving immigrant, communities of color, and low‑income populations.
• Familiarity with the United States tax system through coursework, personal filing, or volunteer tax preparation.
• Strong attention to detail and comfort working with numbers.
• Current law, undergraduate, accounting student, law or accounting graduate, or equivalent experience.
