Speechwriter

About the role

The New York City Police Department is seeking a skilled Speechwriter to craft clear, compelling communications for the Police Commissioner and senior leadership. You will translate complex public‑safety topics into engaging speeches, remarks, op‑eds, and other written materials.

Key responsibilities

• Draft speeches, talking points, briefing materials, video scripts, op‑eds, statements, and quotes for senior officials.
• Support preparation for press conferences, public events, ceremonies, legislative hearings, and media engagements.
• Research and synthesize crime trends, policy initiatives, and operational updates into concise language.
• Collaborate with NYPD bureaus to gather accurate information and verify facts.
• Edit and proofread executive communications for clarity, tone, grammar, and consistency.
• Monitor public‑safety issues and news to ensure timely executive messaging.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree.
• At least 2 years of professional writing experience, preferably in government, public affairs, journalism, or communications.
• Ability to write quickly and accurately under deadline pressure.

Required skills

• Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and research abilities.
