Senior Sustainable Development Officer

About the role

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is seeking a Senior Sustainable Development Officer to lead and coordinate the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes that accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through 2030 and beyond.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design, implementation and assessment of programmes and projects related to sustainable development and the 2027 SDG Summit preparation.
• Conduct research on emerging sustainable development issues, analyse findings and propose evidence‑based recommendations.
• Coordinate policy development, review assessments, and oversee data‑collection initiatives, surveys and analysis.
• Prepare background papers, analytical reports, and substantive sections of publications on SDG topics.
• Provide substantive support to intergovernmental meetings, offering strategic advice, technical guidance and assistance in building consensus.

Required profile

• Senior‑level experience leading sustainable development programmes or projects.
• Strong research, analytical and policy‑development capabilities.
• Proven ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders and produce high‑quality written outputs.
• Experience supporting intergovernmental or consultative processes.
