Senior Software Engineer - Storefront Services Team

About the role

Commerce, the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics and Makeswift, is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Storefront Services Team. The service powers every BigCommerce storefront, and the engineer works with product managers and partner teams to shape requirements and design solutions before building and releasing them. The team is distributed across time zones, values clear writing and independence, and engineers take their own changes all the way to production.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain the service powering every BigCommerce storefront, working with product managers and partners on requirements and design.
• Add and extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields, following schema guidelines so changes stay backward compatible for headless storefronts and third-party integrations.
• Evolve the storefront service to support AI-driven shopping, so agents and shopping assistants can browse, build carts and check out.
• Investigate and fix production issues and improve performance and reliability.
• Review code from teammates and other engineering teams, and grow through design reviews and pairing with senior engineers.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience building backend services that run in production.
• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS or equivalent experience.
• Preferred: production experience with Scala or Kotlin; engineers in other languages (e.g. Java, Go) eager to learn Scala are encouraged to apply.
• Experience turning stakeholder requirements into a technical design and delivering to production.

Required skills

• HTTP fundamentals such as caching headers, cookies, sessions and timeouts.
• Familiarity with GraphQL APIs.
• Familiarity with service-to-service communication and caching (e.g. gRPC, Redis).
• Debugging production issues with metrics, traces and logs (e.g. Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Sentry).
• Releasing changes safely through feature flags and gradual rollouts.
• Automated tests and CI/CD pipelines.
• Regular use of AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor) and review of AI-generated code.

The role is remote. The stated pay transparency range is $116,000 - $195,000, depending on experience, skills, qualifications and location; final compensation is set during hiring. Candidates must pass identity verification through the company's interview process.
