Senior Software Engineer - IBM Sterling (Remote)

About the role

The Home Depot is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for a fully remote position focused on IBM Sterling. The engineer designs, builds and supports highly available, distributed payment orchestration services that manage the full money lifecycle for omni-channel orders within Customer Order Management (COM). The role coordinates payment workflows such as authorization, fraud hold management, reverse authorization, charge (billing) and refunds by integrating IBM Sterling with downstream payment processors and tender systems.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, test, deploy and maintain software, including test suites, with a focus on rapid deployment to production
• Build resilient, event-driven microservices across hybrid platforms (GKE in Google Cloud and PCF/Cloud Foundry on-premises)
• Ensure accurate payment state management, high-volume transaction reliability and observability across the ecosystem
• Work in agile teams, collaborate with the product team so user stories are valuable, developer-ready and testable, and communicate clearly with different audiences
• Support junior engineers by guiding them on modern software development frameworks and leading technical discussions

Required profile

• Age 18 or older
• 3 years of work experience
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field
• Hands-on experience building and maintaining distributed microservices in production
• Experience with IBM Sterling OMS, including configuration, customization or integration
• Experience troubleshooting and supporting high-availability systems in production

Required skills

• Backend microservices with Java and Spring Boot
• API design and integration with external enterprise systems
• Event-driven architectures and messaging (Kafka, Google Pub/Sub or IBM MQ)
• Google Cloud Platform, including containerized workloads on Kubernetes/GKE
• Preferred: microservices with RESTful APIs, GCP services, observability with Grafana and log analytics, and automation scripts

No travel required. The pay range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Nevada, New York City, Ithaca (NY), Westchester County (NY) and Washington residents is $80,000 - $180,000.
