Senior Principal Software Engineer, Data Platforms

About the role

Atlassian is looking for a Senior Principal Software Engineer to provide organization-wide technical leadership across its Trusted Data Platform (TDP) and Data Exchange Platform (DXP). The role shapes the architecture of a cloud-agnostic data infrastructure, including compute and runtime foundations, streaming and data-movement capabilities, and platform intelligence. It is a high-leverage individual-contributor position working with engineering teams and technical leaders across the United States, Australia and India; candidates must be located in the United States.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as a senior technical leader, defining architectural direction and principles for multi-team initiatives and leading architecture reviews.
• Define multi-year technical strategy and lead large, cross-team programs covering data infrastructure, streaming, cloud portability and platform intelligence.
• Shape how TDP and DXP run across multiple clouds, regions and environments, and define reusable compute and runtime patterns.
• Guide the streaming substrate and data-movement capabilities, including event streaming, change-data capture and replication.
• Shape TDP Insights, the intelligence layer, and establish standards for telemetry, observability and operational insights.
• Set engineering standards for availability, durability, security, compliance and recoverability, and act as escalation point for major incidents.
• Influence Directors, engineering managers and stakeholders without direct authority, and mentor principal and senior engineers.

Required profile

• Significant experience as a senior technical leader for large-scale distributed systems, data platforms, streaming infrastructure or cloud platforms.
• Demonstrated success setting technical direction and delivering multi-team platform initiatives.
• Experience designing or operating large-scale streaming, messaging, data-processing, storage or analytical systems.
• Experience with multi-cloud deployments and enterprise requirements such as data residency, encryption, compliance and disaster recovery.
• Ability to influence senior engineers and stakeholders without direct authority, and to mentor engineers.

Required skills

• Deep expertise in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, reliability engineering and production operations.
• Strong understanding of Kubernetes or comparable compute platforms.
• Experience with Kafka or comparable event-streaming technologies, stream-processing systems such as Flink, distributed databases (TiDB is a plus), data lakehouses, multi-cloud migrations or internal developer platforms is beneficial but not required.

What we offer

• Base pay for new hires depending on location: Zone A $243,900-$318,425, Zone B $219,510-$286,583, Zone C $202,437-$264,293.
