Senior Political Affairs Officer

About the role

The Senior Political Affairs Officer will support the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2653 (2022) within the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch. Reporting directly to the Chief of the Branch, the incumbent will provide substantive political analysis and strategic guidance to the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies.

Key responsibilities

• Formulate political strategies, identify emerging issues, and propose policy directives for the Security Council and its subsidiary organs.
• Plan, coordinate and manage inter‑departmental programmes, projects and activities, ensuring integration of gender, human‑rights and conflict‑prevention perspectives.
• Prepare briefing notes, talking points and supervise the drafting of Secretary‑General reports to the Security Council.
• Lead a work team, allocate assignments, mentor staff, and participate in recruitment and training initiatives.
• Coordinate secretariat services for the Security Council, special conferences and summits, and represent the division at external events.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, or a related field.
• Minimum ten years of progressively responsible experience in political analysis, international security, conflict resolution, or providing substantive support to the UN Security Council or its subsidiary organs.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Security Council policies, procedures and practices.
