Senior Mechanical Engineer – Sustaining Engineering

About the role

LILALila is looking for a Mechanical Engineer II / Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Sustaining Engineering team. You will focus on improving the reliability, uptime, and lifecycle performance of bench‑scale robotic and mechanical systems already deployed in scientific automation labs.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance deployed robotics and mechanical workcells used in life‑science and physical‑science workflows.
• Diagnose failures across pneumatic, electromechanical, optical, and mechanical subsystems and implement durable corrective actions.
• Design replacement parts, retrofits, fixtures, and reliability improvements using SolidWorks CAD, GD&T, and DFMA.
• Create and validate prototypes with rapid‑fabrication methods such as 3D printing and laser cutting.
• Conduct structured root‑cause analysis (5 Whys, fishbone) and manage engineering changes through ECO/ECM, PDM/PLM, and requirements‑management tools.
• Plan preventive maintenance, manage component obsolescence, and track reliability metrics (MTBF, MTTR, fault rates).
• Maintain design documentation, runbooks, and lessons learned, and coordinate with external vendors for spares and custom components.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven experience troubleshooting mechanical systems in operational environments, especially where mechanical, electrical, and controls interfaces intersect.
• Familiarity with reliability and quality improvement methods such as RCA, FMEA, and CAPA.
