Senior Mechanical Engineer – Cable Magnets

About the role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and delivery of cable magnet hardware for its fusion projects. You will own the hardware from concept through installation, ensuring it meets stringent performance and safety requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Drive autonomous ownership of cable magnet hardware for SPARC, ARC, or related projects, delivering designs on schedule.
• Develop and iterate design concepts using deep knowledge of physics, structural mechanics, and analysis techniques for metals and composites.
• Collaborate with R&D, analysis, manufacturing, and procurement teams to meet program milestones.
• Diagnose production and assembly issues, propose root‑cause solutions, and implement design changes.
• Prepare design documentation, technical specifications, reports, and validation presentations.
• Mentor junior engineers and promote best engineering practices.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 7 years of engineering design and analysis experience.
• Minimum 2 years supporting production hardware, resolving technical issues, and applying design‑for‑manufacturing principles.
• Hands‑on experience designing parts for high loads or extreme environments.
