About the role
Texas A&M University’s Geochemical & Environmental Research Group is looking for a Senior Marine Instrumentation Specialist to maintain, operate, calibrate and repair oceanographic and laboratory equipment. The role supports research cruises, designs new instrumentation and ensures reliable data collection both on‑site and at sea.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain, operate, calibrate, troubleshoot and repair electronic and electromechanical oceanographic and laboratory equipment at the GERG facility and during field deployments.
- Assist with installation, integration, requisition and vendor coordination of new scientific instruments and spare parts.
- Prepare equipment documentation, operation manuals and inventory records; manage disposal of obsolete gear.
- Participate in research cruises, lead equipment servicing missions and provide guidance to assigned staff.
- Design, modify and fabricate custom instrumentation to meet project requirements.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Minimum five years of experience with marine or laboratory instrumentation.
- Physical ability to lift and move moderate‑weight objects and work outdoors in varied weather.
- Capability to operate industrial equipment such as forklifts, trucks, trailers and small vessels.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Required skills
- Printed circuit board (PCB) assembly and inspection.
- Multimeter use for circuit troubleshooting.
- Operation and basic practice of oceanographic equipment, instrumentation and sensors.
- Understanding of environmental field work principles.
- Laboratory and industrial safety procedures.
- Electronics fundamentals: component identification and schematic reading (analog and digital).
- Forklift operation.
- Small vessel operation.
