Senior Java Engineer

About the role

The Senior Java Engineer will lead the design, development, migration, and support of scalable Java‑based microservices and APIs in a modern cloud environment for the Department of Veterans Affairs. This remote, full‑time role combines hands‑on coding with technical leadership to modernize legacy systems.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute migration from monolithic applications to Java microservices while ensuring system availability.
• Design and develop REST and GraphQL APIs, including specifications, endpoints, and data models.
• Define data strategies, migrate shared databases to service‑specific layers, and maintain data integrity.
• Deploy, monitor, and operate workloads on Kubernetes in AWS using Helm charts and resource management.
• Optimize database performance through query tuning, indexing, connection pooling, and caching.
• Write production‑grade code, integrate APIs with internal and third‑party systems, and support on‑call operations.
• Promote AI‑assisted development using tools such as GitHub Copilot.
• Implement authentication, authorization, encryption, and secure development practices.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience building scalable Java services and leading technical teams.
• Proven track record breaking down large legacy monoliths into independent services.
• Hands‑on expertise with modern Java, Spring Boot, Hibernate, and API development.
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) and cloud platforms (AWS).
• Strong knowledge of containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes, Helm).
• Familiarity with application security, OAuth, and Git version control.
