Senior IT Platform Engineer

About the role

The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology is seeking a Senior IT Platform Engineer to join the Enterprise Linux Services team. This role supports research, teaching, and academic units by ensuring reliable Linux‑based infrastructure across on‑premise, virtual, and cloud environments.

Key responsibilities

• Administer and maintain Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu systems.
• Deploy OS patches, provision new machines, and manage configuration states using Puppet, Ansible, and Satellite.
• Design, implement, and troubleshoot AWS solutions with CloudFormation.
• Collaborate with Platform Engineering, operational departments, and junior staff to resolve complex IT issues.
• Ensure maximum uptime and service stability for both on‑prem and cloud deployments.
• Lead presentations and provide technical guidance to small‑to‑medium groups.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
• At least four years of professional experience implementing and managing enterprise Linux solutions.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, or on‑call during emergencies.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lb and perform standard office tasks.
