About the role

The Small Airborne Effectors Division of Leidos Defense Systems, within the Kinetic Effects Business Area, is seeking an experienced, hands-on Systems Integration & Avionics Engineer for its Huntsville, Alabama campus. The team develops, tests and produces small airborne missiles, UAS and payload effectors for customers such as the US Special Operations Forces, US Air Force and US Army. The role covers maintenance, integration, inspection and troubleshooting of avionics, instrument systems and related airborne electronics, in a prototype environment that can later move to production.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and integrate new solutions as part of a multi-disciplinary prototype design team.
  • Integrate avionics, sensors or control systems into UAS platforms, including installation, wiring, mounting, alignment, configuration, documentation and functional checks.
  • Perform inspections, servicing, maintenance and calibration of avionics and instrument systems (navigation, communications, flight-control electronics, sensors, data links, power systems).
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose faults using technical manuals, schematics and test equipment.
  • Maintain, operate and inspect Ground Support Equipment (GSE) to ensure safe and reliable launch capability.
  • Run post-integration testing, system-level functional checks and flight-line acceptance checks.
  • Transition prototypes to production and support post-fielding sustainment, technical support and training.
  • Maintain maintenance, inspection and repair records and assist in on-the-job training of junior engineers and technicians.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, technical orders, SOPs and record-keeping standards, and respond to unscheduled maintenance or field support needs.

Required profile

  • High school diploma or GED with 8 years of experience, or an Associate's degree with 6 years, or a Bachelor's degree with 4 years of related experience; higher degree in electrical engineering, avionics, aerospace technology or electronics preferred.
  • Experience in avionics/instrumentation maintenance, repair and integration, ideally on uncrewed or crewed aircraft (5+ years of Group 2/3 UAS or small missile systems experience preferred).
  • US citizen eligible to obtain a Secret Clearance.
  • Willingness to travel and deploy, and flexibility to work irregular schedules.

Required skills

  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, schematics, technical manuals and installation drawings.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools and electronic test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators).
  • Preferred: experience with ArduPilot and PX4, avionics certifications (e.g. FAA A&P with avionics endorsement), and CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Altium, Visio or DrawIO.

Pay range: $87,100 - $157,450.
