Senior IBM i (AS/400 / iSeries) Systems Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Senior IBM i (AS/400 / iSeries) Systems Engineer to join our client’s infrastructure team on a long‑term contract. The role involves end‑to‑end management of IBM i environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and security for critical business applications.

Key responsibilities

• Install, configure, administer and maintain IBM i (AS/400) systems.
• Perform OS upgrades, PTF management and routine system maintenance.
• Monitor system performance, storage utilization and capacity planning.
• Manage user profiles, security policies and access controls.
• Support backup, recovery, business continuity and disaster‑recovery initiatives.
• Handle job queues, subsystems, output queues and workload performance.
• Troubleshoot OS, hardware and application issues.
• Assist application development and deployment teams.
• Implement automation and operational best practices.
• Maintain technical documentation, standards and procedures.
• Participate in production support and on‑call rotations.

Required profile

• 5+ years of hands‑on experience with IBM i / AS/400 environments.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate across infrastructure, application, database, network and security teams.
• Experience in banking, manufacturing, insurance, retail, logistics or healthcare is a plus.

Required skills

• IBM i (i5/OS, OS/400) and Power Systems.
• CL programming (CLP) and Control Language commands.
• System administration, PTF management, save/restore procedures.
• Backup and recovery tools, especially BRMS.
• Job scheduling, performance monitoring, libraries, objects, subsystems, job and output queues.
• Security administration and auditing.
• PowerHA, PowerVM, VIOS, LPARs, MIMIX, Quick‑EDD, Robot Scheduler/Console.
• Db2 for i, Integrated File System (IFS), TCP/IP networking, FTP/SFTP, SSL/TLS.
• System performance tuning, storage optimization, capacity planning, high‑availability configuration and disaster‑recovery testing.
• Experience with IBM i versions 7.3, 7.4, 7.5 or later.
