Senior Generative AI Application Engineer, Learning & Development

About the role

Shield AI, a venture-backed defense-tech company, is hiring a Senior AI Engineer for its Hivemind Learning & Development team in San Diego. This individual contributor builds the AI-powered products, content systems and measurement capabilities that help engineers learn Hivemind faster and apply it successfully. The role combines production AI engineering, developer experience and technical education, working closely with Applications Engineering, Hivemind engineering and Customer Success.

Key responsibilities

• Develop an AI-powered training coach that helps people learn Hivemind concepts, products and development workflows.
• Create highly technical Hivemind training materials and hands-on workshops for engineers and other technical learners.
• Build prompt-based tooling that generates workshops and learning content from defined objectives, audiences and source materials.
• Create LLM-based tooling that keeps Hivemind training materials up to date with product releases.
• Build AI tools and systems that streamline and automate Hivemind Learning & Development workflows.

Required profile

• Progressive experience building production software, AI-enabled products, developer tools, technical learning platforms or comparable systems.
• Experience translating complex software concepts into technical documentation, labs, workshops and developer education.
• Ability to learn a sophisticated technical product quickly, work with subject-matter experts and turn ambiguous needs into testable learning solutions.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality using automated tests, human review, telemetry or task-based measures.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, Data Science, Learning Technology or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Required skills

• Integration of large language models, generative AI APIs, RAG, agents, prompt workflows or AI-assisted automation in production environments.
• Software engineering fundamentals: API design, testing, observability, documentation, secure coding and maintainable architecture.
• Python; ability to read, debug and write credible examples in modern C++.
• Preferred: autonomy, robotics, aerospace, defense, simulation or safety-critical software experience, and hands-on technical workshop facilitation.
