Senior FOIA Specialist

About the role

Aretum, a federal consulting organization serving defense, civilian and homeland security clients, is seeking a detail-oriented Senior FOIA Specialist to support its Freedom of Information Act program and ensure compliance with FOIA regulations and guidelines. The position is remote, with occasional travel of less than 10% for project needs, client meetings, team collaboration events or training. Employees may be expected to handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and must follow safeguarding and compliance requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Timely acknowledge incoming FOIAs, referrals, consultations, FOIA appeals and Privacy Act requests
• Conduct responsiveness reviews, de-dupe records and exercise discretion on fee categories, fee waivers and expedited processing grants
• Prepare search memoranda for record custodians and review large record sets carefully
• Apply redactions to responsive records in line with the FOIA, USDA's FOIA regulations and applicable case law
• Manage administrative files per internal standard operating procedures
• Coordinate and oversee large-scale collections involving multiple components
• Follow USDA's confidentiality statutes

Required profile

• 5+ years of FOIA processing experience
• Juris Doctor (JD)
• Federal FOIA processing experience as a federal employee or federal contractor
• Experience handling complex FOIA requests with submitter outreach and consultations
• Ability to work within a team, strong analytical and writing skills
• U.S. work authorization and eligibility for a Public Trust or Suitability Determination
