Senior Counsel, AI Legal – Operations & Commercial

About the role

The Senior Counsel, AI Legal – Operations & Commercial will provide senior‑level legal guidance for the deployment and scaling of artificial‑intelligence technologies across AbbVie. Working as an individual contributor, you will partner with business units, legal operations and governance teams to ensure AI initiatives are launched efficiently, consistently and in line with risk‑management policies.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver legal support for AI‑enabled use cases across commercial, R&D and enterprise productivity functions.
• Conduct and oversee large‑scale legal risk assessments covering data privacy, data governance, intellectual property, licensing and regulatory compliance.
• Draft, review and negotiate complex AI‑related commercial agreements, including SaaS vendor contracts, data licensing and AI‑enabled service agreements.
• Develop and maintain standard AI contracting templates, fallback positions and enterprise playbooks for AI procurement.
• Collaborate with Legal Operations and Governance teams to scale AI intake and review workflows (e.g., ACTOR) and improve consistency of legal reviews.
• Provide senior‑level guidance and training to business stakeholders on AI legal risks and best practices.
• Escalate and coordinate resolution of high‑risk or complex AI legal issues with senior AI Legal leadership.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (JD) with active bar membership.
• Minimum 5 years of legal experience, preferably 8 years, with a focus on commercial contracting and technology transactions.
• Strong expertise in data‑privacy law, intellectual‑property matters and SaaS agreements.
• Proven ability to manage high‑volume, complex legal workflows.
• Experience with AI/ML technologies or digital platforms and familiarity with enterprise governance and workflow tools.
• Prior in‑house experience in a large, matrixed organization is preferred.
