Senior Backend Engineer (Remote)

About the role

VetsEZ is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer for a 100% remote position on a large federal government healthcare technology project. The role supports the design, development and modernization of enterprise backend services, APIs and integration solutions that enable secure, scalable and maintainable healthcare applications. The engineer works closely with architects, product owners, QA teams and DevSecOps personnel, and the candidate must live in the continental US.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop backend services, APIs and enterprise integration components for mission-critical healthcare applications.
• Lead technical implementation of service-layer business logic, data processing, error handling and system integrations.
• Work with architects and technical leadership to align development with platform standards, roadmap priorities and non-functional requirements.
• Perform code reviews, mentor junior engineers and promote best practices for maintainability, reliability, security and performance.
• Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, defect remediation and production support across multiple environments.
• Optimize performance, monitoring, logging and observability.
• Contribute to design reviews, estimation, release planning and technical documentation.
• Partner with QA and DevSecOps to improve testability, deployment readiness and operational resilience.
• Identify refactoring and technical debt reduction opportunities, and support Agile delivery processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in backend engineering, enterprise application development or software engineering.
• Proven ability to lead technical implementation and mentor developers in Agile teams.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Government/Public Trust clearance, including fingerprinting and a background check; U.S. citizenship is required.
• Preferred: experience with federal healthcare programs, VA initiatives or regulated technology delivery, and experience with high-availability or high-volume enterprise systems.

• Java, Spring Boot, RESTful API development and microservices architecture.

• Authentication, authorization and secure application development.
• CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows and production support.
• A plus: InterSystems IRIS, FHIR APIs, containerized deployments, AWS, and relevant certifications.
