Senior Animal Care Technician

About the role

The Division of Veterinary Resources at the University of Miami seeks a Senior Animal Care Technician to oversee animal husbandry on the Medical Campus. You will train and monitor staff, ensure facility readiness, and support veterinary and research teams in daily animal care activities.

Key responsibilities

• Train and monitor fellow technicians on proper animal husbandry procedures.
• Provide daily care for a variety of research animals, including non‑human primates and large species.
• Perform facility rounds, submit work orders, and follow up on maintenance issues.
• Prepare animal diets, cages, and water for autoclaving; operate autoclaves, sterilizers, and cage‑wash equipment.
• Assist veterinary and research staff with sample collection, treatments, and medication administration.
• Observe animals for signs of injury or disease and report findings.
• Maintain environmental records (light cycles, temperature, humidity) and animal health documentation.
• Receive and house animals and supplies from vendors according to SOPs.

Required profile

• Extensive experience with multiple animal species, including large animals.
• Proven ability to train staff and students in animal handling.
• Strong attention to detail for record‑keeping and facility monitoring.
• Ability to work independently and communicate concerns to supervisors.
