Senior AI/ML Backend Engineer

About the role

Lyra Health, a provider of evidence-based mental health care serving millions of people worldwide, is looking for an experienced Senior AI/ML Backend Engineer to build the backend services for its AI/ML product features. The ideal candidate takes ownership of their work and leads cross-functional projects with therapists, data scientists, engineers and product managers.

Key responsibilities

• Build machine learning and generative AI backend services that support the company's ML/AI product features.
• Create the backend infrastructure needed for scalable, resilient and highly performant solutions.
• Deploy and manage applications in production.

Required profile

• 6+ years of experience delivering production-ready products.
• Ability to write high-quality code in Python.
• Enjoys cross-functional collaboration and thrives on solving complex, meaningful problems.
• A thoughtful approach to balancing quality and deadlines in fast-paced settings, and excellent communication skills.

Required skills

• Modern async Python web frameworks such as FastAPI and data streaming (WebSockets, Server-Sent Events).
• Docker and deployment to Kubernetes.
• Relational and low-latency databases.
• RAG integration, generative AI chatbots, and LLM observability tools such as Langfuse.
• LLM orchestration frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex) and foundation model APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS Bedrock).

Nice to have: vector databases, Celery, Protobuf, Java/Kotlin, AWS cloud infrastructure, and experience with highly sensitive healthcare data.
