Scientist 3 – Translational Medicine, IBD
roche · South San Francisco
Job description
About the role
Genentech's Translational Medicine OMNI department develops biomarker strategies and conducts clinical translational research across ophthalmology, metabolism, neuroscience, immunology and infectious diseases. Within inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the team integrates clinical and translational research to study disease heterogeneity, mucosal immune dysregulation and tissue damage and repair. As a Scientist 3, you will combine wet-lab experimentation with data science to identify and validate therapeutic targets and biomarkers, applying human-relevant models and high-dimensional omics data to drive reverse translation.
Key responsibilities
- Design and run experiments using patient-derived biospecimens (intestinal tissue biopsies, blood, stool)
- Establish and run complex human-relevant models such as intestinal organoids, primary immune cell co-cultures and air-liquid interface systems
- Develop, qualify and run custom assays (multiplex immunoassays, ELISA, flow cytometry, histology)
- Analyze scRNA-seq, CITE-seq, spatial transcriptomics and proteomics data with R or Python to find biomarkers and support patient stratification
- Translate lab findings into insights for clinical development programs
- Evaluate emerging technologies and platforms, and collaborate with Research, Bioanalytical Sciences, Biostatistics, Computational Sciences and Clinical Development
Required profile
- PhD with post-doctoral experience in immunology, cell/molecular biology, mucosal biology, biochemistry or a related life science, with a strong publication record
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in immunology or mucosal biology, ideally in IBD research
- Ability to design, run and troubleshoot complex studies independently while managing multiple priorities
Required skills
- Bench techniques: flow cytometry, multiplex immunoassays, ELISA, RT-qPCR, histology
- Single-cell workflows: scRNA-seq, CITE-seq
- Coding in R or Python for omics data analysis
Preferred: hands-on experience isolating primary cells from human intestinal tissue, advanced expertise in organoid and microphysiological systems, and a track record of cross-functional collaboration. Relocation benefits are not available; the stated salary range is $100,400-$186,400 for the California location, with a possible discretionary annual bonus.
