School-Based Mental Health Counselor (Elementary)

About the role

The School-Based Mental Health Counselor provides direct mental health services to elementary students at Seventh District Elementary School. Working on‑site during school hours, the counselor delivers individual and group counseling, assessments, treatment planning, and crisis intervention using trauma‑informed, culturally responsive practices.

Key responsibilities

• Provide on‑site individual and small‑group counseling to up to 15 elementary students, delivering approximately 40 sessions per week.
• Conduct mental health screenings, assessments, and develop individualized treatment plans in compliance with clinical and regulatory standards.
• Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record, adhering to Medicaid, COMAR, and organizational guidelines.
• Collaborate with school staff, families, and interdisciplinary teams on behavioral strategies, IEP/504 plans, and student support meetings.
• Offer crisis intervention, safety planning, and coordinate referrals to internal and external providers.
• Participate in required trainings, CEUs, and supervision to sustain licensure and clinical competence.

Required profile

• Hold a valid state license as a mental health counselor, therapist, or equivalent professional credential.
• Demonstrate ability to maintain compliance with professional licensure requirements, ethical standards, and school district policies.
• Commit to attending ongoing trainings, supervision, and continuing education to ensure clinical competence.
