Retail Pharmacy Intern

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Retail Pharmacy Intern in its Pharmacy department. The intern gains hands-on experience in a fast-paced retail pharmacy while working toward their pharmacy degree, filling prescriptions under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and helping with inventory and quality assurance. The position is hourly and open to enrolled pharmacy students.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers and provide prompt, friendly service
• Fill and help process prescriptions under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, following state and federal laws
• Prepare prescriptions and affix labels to prescription containers
• Report medication errors to the appropriate personnel
• Assist with inventory control, including ordering, stocking, checking invoices and entering inventory information
• Help with monthly inventory and follow security and regulatory procedures, including Quality Assurance Programs
• Assist in training pharmacy employees and maintain the cleanliness of the pharmacy and dispensing area
• Maintain confidentiality of patient medical information and prescription drug pricing in line with HIPAA
• Follow standard operating procedures, report to work on schedule, and help with other store tasks and special projects

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college of pharmacy
• Registered with the State Pharmacy Board as an intern
• Six months or less of similar or related work experience preferred
• Ability to stand and walk frequently during a shift, including at the counter, and to count, pour, package and label medications
• Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and sharps, and immunization administration where certified

Required skills

• Logical and scientific thinking and accurate arithmetic, algebraic and geometric calculations
• Reading and following technical manuals and evaluating technical data
• Counseling and advising customers and interacting professionally with patients and healthcare providers
• Discretion and integrity with confidential patient and financial information

Employment is contingent upon a successful pre-employment drug screen. The reporting line is to the Store Director, Store Manager and Pharmacy Department Manager.
