Research Program Associate, AI Safety

About the role

You will work closely with Research Managers, mentors, and program leadership to design and continuously improve the structures that enable fellows to conduct high‑impact AI safety research. This program‑building role focuses on creating systems for mentor‑fellow matching, goal tracking, progress assessment, and unblocking fellows when needed.

Key responsibilities

• Design and iterate on fellow selection processes, outreach campaigns, and structured program evaluation frameworks.
• Identify high‑potential outreach channels and own outreach campaigns for future fellowship cycles.
• Develop feedback mechanisms and communication loops between fellows, mentors, and leadership.
• Support the design and execution of fellowship events such as speaker series and poster days.
• Design and manage mentor onboarding, ensuring clear expectations and resources.
• Assist research managers with complex fellow or mentor situations and create supplementary programming like reading groups and lightning talks.

Required profile

• Experience in research‑adjacent environments and an understanding of what good research support looks like.
• Systems‑thinking ability to identify friction points and design simple, effective solutions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proactive, direct style.
• Highly organized, able to keep multi‑stakeholder projects on track and maintain clear documentation.
• Strong collaborator and stakeholder manager who can work across managers, mentors, fellows, and leadership.
• Deep alignment with CBAI’s mission and familiarity with AGI safety and catastrophic AI risks.
• Curiosity about AI safety research and a habit of staying current on relevant developments.
• Proven track record of designing or improving programs, initiatives, or organizational systems.
