Research Associate 2 – Neurology (Hybrid)

About the role

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Neurology seeks a full‑time Research Associate 2 to work in a hybrid setting in Miami, FL. The associate will support the Brain Endowment Bank by performing specialized histology and neuropathology activities under senior staff supervision.

Key responsibilities

• Process brain tissue specimens through fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining, and slide preparation using specialized histology equipment.
• Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment for tissue processing, microtomy, and immunohistochemical staining.
• Perform routine and advanced histological and immunohistochemical staining, including antibody validation and optimization.
• Analyze and verify slide quality and laboratory findings to ensure accuracy and compliance with quality standards.
• Maintain inventories of antibodies, chemicals, slides, tissue blocks, and other laboratory supplies.
• Update laboratory records, immunohistochemistry logs, neuropathology logs, and specimen tracking systems.
• Develop, revise, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory protocols.
• Provide technical guidance, training, and support to laboratory assistants and technicians.
• Participate in manuscript preparation, scientific reports, presentations, and grant applications.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant laboratory experience.
• Learning agility to adopt new procedures and technologies.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Technical proficiency with office software and relevant computer applications.

Required skills

• Histology techniques (fixation, embedding, sectioning).
• Immunohistochemistry staining and antibody validation.
• Operation and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment (microtome, slide stainer, etc.).
• Data management and specimen tracking.
• Development and maintenance of SOPs and laboratory protocols.
