About the role
The Reef Fish and Shrimp Fisheries Observer works aboard commercial vessels in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic, collecting biological and gear‑selectivity data for the National Marine Fisheries Service. This full‑time, on‑site position supports the Southeast Fisheries Science Center’s research and regulatory programs.
Key responsibilities
- Record detailed information on gear, catch, by‑catch, and incidental takes of marine mammals, seabirds, and turtles.
- Collect biological samples and conduct fish, shrimp, and marine mammal identification on deck.
- Participate in a three‑week paid training program covering sampling protocols, safety, and species identification.
- Deploy on commercial vessels ranging from 30’ to 90’ for trips lasting 1 to 45 days.
- Submit accurate data reports to NMFS and related government agencies.
Required profile
- Willingness to work at sea for extended periods without internet or cellular service.
- Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and work in rough sea conditions.
- Comfort with limited English communication among crew members.
- Commitment to marine conservation and fisheries sustainability.
