R&D Scientific Infrastructure Strategy Lead
roche · South San Francisco
Job description
About the role
Genentech Research and Early Development is looking for a R&D Scientific Infrastructure Strategy Lead to shape the physical footprint of the gRED Center, supporting its 'Lab-in-a-Loop' drug discovery vision. The role bridges next-generation science and state-of-the-art lab facility engineering, embedding computational sciences within laboratory neighborhoods and optimizing workflows, shared resources and utilities.
Key responsibilities
- Translate AI-driven, automated lab workflows and Phenotype Space Profiles into physical space, embedding computational sciences within lab neighborhoods.
- Map and optimize scientific workflows of people, samples, waste and materials, and develop scalable, cost-efficient concepts for shared resources such as cold storage and core equipment.
- Design and run workshops to help users move existing workflows into automated, shared laboratory environments.
- Maintain the Equipment List and Utilities Matrix, coordinating power, data, gases, waste and environmental controls.
- Specify bench-level utility placements that support bespoke labs and autonomous robotics, so zones can be renovated without disrupting operations.
- Conduct design reviews, resolve architectural and engineering redlines, and define requirements for specialized spaces such as CryoEM, NMR, reagent repository and proof-of-concept rooms.
- Plan physical mockups, support instrument relocation, installation verification and user commissioning so the facility is operational on Day 1.
Required profile
- PhD, MD or equivalent curriculum with significant lab research experience; candidates without a formal degree with comparable training and experience may be considered.
- Proven track record in laboratory planning and workflow design, challenging standard paradigms for AI-driven autonomous workflows.
- Technical understanding of lab casework, EHS considerations and lab utilities, and design for sensitive instruments (vibration, acoustics, EMI, ergonomics).
- Deep knowledge of the drug discovery workflow and ability to lead cross-functional projects independently, coordinating internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to balance scientific ambition with cost and schedule realities, and to build trusted relationships across the organization.
- Onsite presence on the South San Francisco campus at least 3 days a week; relocation benefits are not available.
What we offer
- Expected salary range of $156,500 - $290,700, depending on experience, qualifications and location.
- A discretionary annual bonus may be available.
- The position qualifies for the benefits described in the original listing.
