Public Information Specialist (Government)

About the role

The Public Information Specialist supports Los Angeles County Public Works by creating and managing communications that inform the public about departmental programs, projects, and services. This role blends writing, media relations, and digital content creation to ensure transparent and effective outreach.

Key responsibilities

• Develop publications by researching, synthesizing information, and editing documents.
• Create and coordinate digital media content, staying current with emerging platforms.
• Maintain contact lists for media outlets and coordinate distribution of digital content.
• Plan and execute public information and engagement programs, including special projects, events, and research initiatives.
• Respond to media inquiries, public complaints, and recommendations related to departmental activities.
• Represent the department by building relationships with communication staff at other agencies, community partners, managers, and media outlets.
• Perform specialized tasks that cannot be delegated, in line with departmental policies.
• Supervise assigned staff, providing guidance and direction.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, Public Relations, English, or a closely related field.
• At least three years of relevant experience as specified in the exam qualifications.
• All required experience must be fully met by the filing deadline; out‑of‑class experience will not be accepted.
