Public Information Officer (Bilingual Spanish Preferred)

About the role

The Houston Health Department is seeking a dynamic Public Information Officer to serve as the primary liaison between city council members, department leaders, and the community. This role focuses on delivering accurate health information, managing media relations, and promoting departmental initiatives, with a preference for bilingual Spanish proficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the main point of contact between city council members and HHD program leaders.
• Support daily operations of the public information section, including research, data gathering, and statistical analysis.
• Apply the Associated Press Style Book to edit and proof departmental content.
• Develop and disseminate media messaging across print and digital platforms.
• Represent the department as spokesperson at civic meetings, public events, and media interviews.
• Prepare and distribute timely responses to media inquiries, public questions, and council requests.
• Monitor public feedback and coordinate council correspondence as directed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Public Administration, or a related field.
• Minimum five years of progressive experience in media, public relations, or a closely related area.
• Preference for veterans and candidates with radio/TV news reporting experience.
• Strong understanding of local and national news cycles.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the Associated Press Style Book.
