Protein Purification/Expression Biochemist

About the role

Cogent Scientific is seeking a Protein Purification/Expression Biochemist to join its San Diego team. The role involves designing and executing experiments for recombinant protein production on both small and large scales.

Key responsibilities

• Design and conduct expression and production experiments for recombinant proteins in bacterial and eukaryotic systems.
• Perform protein purification using column chromatography (affinity, size‑exclusion, ion‑exchange, hydrophobic interaction), ultrafiltration, and dialysis, operating Cytiva AKTA FPLC with Unicorn software.
• Develop and optimize protocols to meet quality requirements for structural and functional studies, improving yields and reducing costs.
• Capture experimental data in an electronic notebook and share results promptly.

Required profile

• BS in Biochemistry, Molecular/Cellular Biology or related field with 3‑5 years industrial lab experience (MS with 1‑2 years also considered).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong attention to detail, problem‑solving ability, and learning agility in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary environment.

• Ultrafiltration, dialysis, Cytiva AKTA FPLC, Unicorn software.
• Biophysical characterization methods: mass photometry, spectroscopy, differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF), HPLC, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), surface plasmon resonance (SPR).
• Electronic notebook data capture.
