Protection of Civilians Officer

About the role

The Protection of Civilians Officer (PoC Officer) is based in the Policy and Best Practices Service of the Policy, Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) within the Department of Peace Operations. Reporting to the Team Leader of the Protection of Civilians Team, the officer supports the implementation of protection of civilians mandates across UN peacekeeping missions.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in improving the implementation of protection of civilians mandates in UN peacekeeping operations, coordinating with protection experts, uniformed personnel and regional desks.
• Develop, implement and evaluate POC policy, guidance and implementation strategies; monitor programme development and ensure alignment with political and peacebuilding strategies.
• Review relevant documents, identify issues, initiate corrective actions and liaise with relevant parties to ensure follow‑up.
• Collaborate with DPO, DOS, Regional Pillar, Office of Military Affairs and Office of the Rule of Law and Security Institutions to integrate POC into mission planning.
• Research, analyze and present information from diverse sources; provide specialist inputs for cross‑cutting guidance, training and planning materials.
• Contribute to policy debates, lessons‑learned exercises, survey design, data collection tools and analysis of findings.
